The luxury watch market has begun to embrace the world of crypto and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) faster than many other sectors, as the nascent metaverse is finally taking shape.

Bulgari has released some spectacular horological creations which are tied to NFT technology, with the wow-factor hitting new all-time-highs in the magnificence meters.

New uses of blockchain’s immutable ledger record keeping network is now being integrated with designer watches, including the authenticity and ownership-tracing abilities which are so important to timepiece buyers when they wish to prove a watch is indeed theirs; normally, a paper certificate of authenticity is needed (i.e. “the paperwork”), however the implicit nature of NFTs defines authenticity not with paperwork but with a global blockchain validator network, allowing immediate, trustless verification that the watch is indeed real and that it belongs to a certain individual.

As the metaverse continues to evolve and as the global appeal of crypto assets gains further momentum, luxury watch makers will undoubtedly start to embrace NFT technology even more, and because of this deep link around questions of ownership and authenticity, it is likely that the majority of designer brand products, watchmakers included, will assuredly adopt NFTs as a key facet of their core business model.
